About Molluscum

Molluscum is a common skin condition caused by the molluscum contagiosum virus, which is part of the poxvirus family. It is most common in children between 1 and 10 years of age. However, adults may contract the virus as well. Molluscum is contagious and may spread through direct skin-to-skin contact, touching a surface that someone with molluscum has touched, or sharing clothing, towels, and sports equipment that an infected person has used.

While the condition often resolves on its own, your dermatologist or primary care physician may recommend several treatment options. At Academic Alliance in Dermatology, our team of skin care professionals will work with you to provide an accurate diagnosis and develop a treatment plan tailored to your individual needs.

SIGNS & SYMPTOMS

If you or your child are exhibiting signs of molluscum, it is important to have a dermatologist examine the affected area. While molluscum typically resolves on its own without treatment, there are several other skin conditions that may present with similar symptoms. Therefore, it is crucial to seek professional medical attention to rule out other, more severe conditions.

The most common symptom of molluscum is the presence of flesh-colored, pearly bumps on the skin. These bumps may be from 1mm to 5mm in size and have a dimple or dent in the center. The bumps may itch or feel tender to the touch, but they typically do not cause pain. Molluscum bumps may occur anywhere on the body but are usually located on the following:

  • Torso
  • Arms
  • Groin
  • Back of the knee
  • Armpits

DIAGNOSTIC PROCESS

Molluscum is typically diagnosed through a thorough skin examination by a healthcare provider. Your provider will look for any bumps or lesions associated with the condition. In some cases, a small sample of the bumps may be taken for further examination under a microscope to confirm the diagnosis.

If you believe you or your child may have molluscum, our team at Academic Alliance in Dermatology is here to provide an accurate diagnosis. Treatment

At Academic Alliance in Dermatology, we understand the importance of finding a treatment plan that works best for you. Depending on your individual needs, our team will work with you to develop a tailored approach to treating molluscum. As mentioned above, molluscum often resolves on its own, but in some cases, treatment may be necessary. Treatment options are described below:

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy is a method of freezing the affected area with liquid nitrogen in order to destroy the bumps associated with molluscum. It may cause some temporary discomfort, but it is typically effective at getting rid of molluscum.

Pulsed Dye Laser

Pulsed dye laser treatment is a common method used to treat molluscum. The laser delivers an intense burst of light to the bumps, causing them to shrink and disappear over time. This treatment is typically performed by a dermatologist and is generally well-tolerated, with little discomfort or downtime. It may be used with other treatments, such as medications or cryotherapy, to clear the molluscum bumps effectively.

Topical Creams

Topical creams are a common treatment option for molluscum. These creams, which are applied directly to the bumps, can help to shrink and clear the lesions over time. They work by disrupting the virus that causes molluscum, preventing it from replicating and spreading to other areas of the skin. There are several different types of topical creams available. Your provider can help determine the best option for an individual’s specific needs.
