7 Skin Issues You Can Treat With Laser Therapy
Unfortunately, many of us are told that we just have to deal with the effects of skin conditions like acne, eczema, rosacea, and aging. But in truth, there are many skin issues that are treatable with laser therapy! In the past decade, we’ve seen an incredible surge in lasers’ healing power— this is evidenced by the long list of topical afflictions that they can address. Here’s 7 of the most common ones.
What Is Laser Therapy?
“Low-level laser (light) therapy (LLLT) is a fast-growing technology used to treat a multitude of conditions that require stimulation of healing, relief of pain and inflammation, and restoration of function.” –Pinar Avci, MD, et al., 2013
While laser technology has been in use for several decades, its popularity in regards to skin treatment has only recently exploded. LLLT (one form of laser therapy) combines the power of low-energy photons with the skin’s natural healing mechanisms to provide substantial relief and improvement from many treatments. Laser therapy can be performed with many different kinds of lasers, so it’s important to know how your specific skin condition will be treated.
Many treatments use non-ablative lasers— these lasers don’t physically remove skin cells. Non-ablative procedures are aimed at stimulating lower-level skin layers, often to push your dermal tissue to produce more collagen and repair any defects. LLLT falls under this category due to its use of red and infra-red light wavelengths.
Some laser therapy treatments use ablative lasers. Treatments involving these lasers will often give you the most dramatic change; ablative lasers are used to treat warts, scars, and wrinkles.
What Can Laser Therapy Treat?
Acne Scars
Even when acne-prone individuals get their skin health under control, they are often left with red splotches and pitted scars from years of damage. Here at AAD, we can treat your acne scarring with a few different lasers: EMatrix/Etwo Sublative (Fractionated bi-polar RF), Sciton BBL, V-Beam (Pulsed-Dye Laser), and Nordlys.
Rosacea
This is a common skin condition, especially in light-skinned middle-aged women, which causes red patches of skin. Rosacea can also present with acne-like sores and visible capillaries just under the skin’s surface. We can treat this skin condition with the following lasers: Elos IPL (Elos Plus via SR/SRA), Aerolase Lightpod Neo (Nd:YAG), GentleMax Pro (ALEX & Nd:YAG), and Nordlys.
Burns
While it may seem counterintuitive to treat burns with a laser, the aim of laser therapy for burn victims is actually to reduce the scarring from healed wounds. Burns tend to scar in a particular pattern – one that responds well to ablative laser therapy.
Stretch Marks
Any rapid growth tends to leave stretch marks on the body. Unfortunately, many women are left with stretch marks after pregnancy, but they can also occur in other situations. Using the matrix/Etwo Sublative (Fractionated bi-polar RF) laser, we can help reduce your stretch marks’ appearance and help bring you more confidence.
Wrinkles
Time is not kind on our bodies, and some people seem to be more affected by its grip; with the use of laser technology, you can stay ahead of fine lines, sagging skin, and wrinkles. Using state-of-the-art treatments like CO2 Laser Resurfacing, we can help your skin stand the test of time.
Hyper-Pigmentation
Sometimes our skin creates excess pigment in strange areas; this is a natural process, but many individuals prefer to have an even skin tone. Here at AAD, we have a variety of treatment options depending on the severity and location of your hyper-pigmentation; six different lasers allow us to address your concerns from a variety of angles.
Decreased Skin Elasticity
As with wrinkles, aging can affect the skin’s natural elasticity; this can lead to sagging skin and misshapen skin surfacing. By using Ultherapy and Sciton BBL on these areas, we can stimulate collagen and elastin production beneath the skin’s surface.
And So Many More!
Here at AAD, we have eleven different lasers that can perform a wide assortment of unique functions. With this variety of wavelengths and intensities, we’re able to treat many skin conditions that aren’t even listed above: general skin tone, telangiectasia, warts, skin texture, nail fungus, décolletage lines, sagging skin, excess hair, sun spots, and more.
